![]() The development of new technologies allowed to explore oil field in deepwater increasing the complexity and risk associated with the oil offloading operation between any oil and gas production facility and the tanker, due to severe environmental conditions. The offshore operations as for oil and gas production have presented a great increase since the early 80s. Finally, some conclusions and suggestions are drawn concerning the needs to reduce the risks and improve certain safety measures. A case study is carried out to determine the most common causes of unintentional damages on cargo ships at coasts and open seas of Turkey. The formal safety assessment (FSA) based approach combines fuzzy set theory (FST), ordered weighted geometric averaging operator (OWGA) and decision making trial and evaluation laboratory technique (DEMATEL). The authors aim to develop a risk method for cleaner and safer maritime transport at coast and open seas of Turkey. ![]() This paper proposes an integrated methodology to identify and evaluate driving factors like geographical locations at the time of the incident and failure modes causing fatality for cargo ships. Integration of these techniques leads to more reliable and realistic solutions. Risk analysis methods gain more and more acceptance as decision support tools to analyze and reduce risks in engineering applications. Besides its robust theoretical insight, the paper has practical contribution to the naval engineers, classification societies and ship owners who have difficulty in deciding appropriate hatch cover type during construction of the ship. The proposed approach is demonstrated with a hatch cover design selection problem since it has utmost importance in structure of bulk carrier ships to prevent water ingress and protect cargo form the external damages. While AHP and VIKOR provides a comprehensive framework to solve multiple-attribute decision making (MADM) problems in maritime transportation industry, the IT2F enables to deal with much uncertainty during linguistic assessment of decision-makers. The proposed hybrid approach integrates Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method into VlseKriterijumska Optimizacijia I Kompromisno Resenje, (VIKOR) technique under interval type-2 fuzzy (IT2F) environment. The aim of this paper is to provide not only a hybrid theoretical methodology in multiple-attribute decision making problems but also a practical application in maritime transportation industry.
